I originally wrote the Note Quiz for my (then) 7-year-old son who struggled to identify notes on the page, thus making sight-reading very difficult for him when playing the violin or singing. He has found this quiz a big help, and even enjoys locking out levels! The premise is very simple, you are shown 20 notes, and you have to identify them in the available time. As the levels go up, the time given goes down. With the exception of the web or 8-bit ROM versions, your progress is recorded between sessions. Four clefs are available - Treble, Alto, Tenor and Bass. The range of notes quizzed is, in the Treble clef, the range of a violin's open G string to 4th finger on the E string in third position, or G3-D6. The other clefs have a similar range, Alto clef A2-E5, the Tenor clef F2-C5 and Bass clef B1-F4. Optionally the note being quizzed will be played, mostly at the correct pitch, but sometimes up an octave where playing at the correct pitch is not available on the hardware or would make your computer sound flatulent. The Note Quiz is available for:
On the Acorn 8-bit machines, it may run in black & white if PAGE is too high and Shadow RAM is not available - it must be no higher than &1900 to run in colour. On the Electron without the Slogger Master RAM Board expansion or co-processor, it will always run in black & white as its colour mode is too slow. Note that the ROMFS builds do not run on the Electron with an active second processor. The Note Quiz is under active development - please report any issues on this Distillery thread or this Stardot thread. ©2023-2025 Michael McConnell, Eridani Star System |
